Next-gen BMW X5 LWB confirmed for India: chauffeur class wins again

BMW will launch the next-generation X5 in India in long-wheelbase form, according to a report by Autocar India on 27 June 2026. The China-spec LWB variant is expected to arrive in the second half of 2027, joining the 3 Series LWB, 5 Series LWB and iX1 LWB already on sale here.
What was announced
Autocar India reports that BMW will bring the next-generation X5 to India only in long-wheelbase guise, sourced from the China-spec production line. The next-gen X5 is due to debut in Europe shortly, first as the all-electric iX5, and will adopt the Neue Klasse design language already seen on the iX3 and i3 EVs. The Indian launch is pegged for the second half of 2027, accounting for the additional engineering time needed for the LWB adaptation.
India's luxury SUV buyer sits in the back, and BMW has finally accepted that the X5 needs to be built for that buyer too.
The decision follows strong demand for BMW's existing LWB portfolio in India. The 3 Series LWB, 5 Series LWB and iX1 LWB were all originally engineered for the Chinese market, and have resonated with Indian luxury buyers who are typically chauffeur-driven and prioritise second-row space. The X5 LWB will slot in as the fourth LWB BMW on sale here.
Two more LWB BMWs are also confirmed for India ahead of the X5: the i5 LWB and the iX3 LWB, both expected to arrive sooner. The next-gen X5 will be offered globally in both standard and long-wheelbase forms, but India will skip the standard car entirely. Powertrain details, pricing and final India specification have not been disclosed, and BMW has not officially confirmed the X5 LWB plan for India.
The Car Jury verdict
The LWB strategy is working, so BMW is doubling down. The 3 Series LWB and 5 Series LWB sell because India's luxury buyer sits in the back, and a full-size SUV with a stretched second row plays to exactly that buyer. Rachit Hirani of MotorOctane notes that "iX1 has been a huge success for them and the same story can happen with the iX3", and the logic carries straight to the X5.
The catch is timing. H2 2027 is eighteen months out, and the current X5 LCI is still a strong buy today; our X5 review rates it BUY. If you need a luxury SUV now, do not wait. If you are chauffeur-driven and the X5 is your next car after 2027, the LWB will be worth holding out for.
