What was announced

The 4.2m to 4.5m SUV segment sold 75,762 units in July 2026, up 61.96% year-on-year from 46,779 units, and 25.74% higher than June 2026's 60,252 units. The growth came from a mix of established nameplates holding ground and new entries from Maruti, Toyota and Tata adding fresh volume.

The Creta is not losing share to new rivals, it is gaining volume alongside them, and that is what should worry every challenger in this segment.

Creta retained clear segment leadership despite the arrival of the Maruti Victoris, Toyota Hyryder refresh, Tata Sierra and Honda Elevate in recent months. Seltos posted the strongest gain among established players, more than doubling year-on-year.

The Maruti Vitara, Toyota Urban Cruiser Hyryder, Honda Elevate and Tata Curvv together made up the remainder, with the newer Victoris and Sierra contributing meaningfully to the segment's month-on-month climb. The segment now sits comfortably above 75,000 units a month, a level the mid-size SUV category has not sustained before.

The Car Jury verdict

The Creta is doing what nobody thought it would this year: adding volume even as Maruti, Toyota and Tata pile fresh metal into the segment. Eighteen thousand units in a month, against a Seltos that has just doubled its sales, tells you the badge equity here is deeper than any single feature war. Our long-standing WAIT call on the petrol Creta stands, because the facelift is now visibly closer and the Creta Electric is where the sharper buy lies today.

For the challengers, the numbers are noisier than they look. As Rachit Hirani of MotorOctane has noted while walking around the Sierra EV, Tata's mid-size push is only half-deployed. Once the ICE Sierra and Victoris ramp fully, expect the Creta's lead to compress, not the segment to shrink. The Seltos remains our BUY.
