Hyundai Neira Electric MPV Breaks Cover At GIIAS: Is This The Carens Clavis EV In Disguise?
Hyundai has pulled the covers off the Neira Prototype at GIIAS 2026 in Indonesia, badging it as a seven-seater electric SUV built with Indonesian families in mind. The proportions, however, look uncannily close to the Kia Carens Clavis EV already on sale in India, suggesting shared underpinnings.
What was announced
Hyundai revealed the Neira Prototype at the Gaikindo Indonesia International Auto Show (GIIAS) 2026, describing it officially as a seven-seater electric SUV. The company has confirmed the model is being developed with Indonesian families as the target buyer and is earmarked for local production in Indonesia, mirroring the strategy Hyundai has used with the Stargazer and Creta for that market.
Kia has already engineered the three-row electric MPV; Hyundai badging the same hardware for India is the obvious next step, not a question of if.
The prototype's proportions are the story. Its long roofline, glasshouse, three-row cabin layout and overall side profile bear a strong resemblance to the Kia Carens Clavis EV currently on sale in India. That opens the credible possibility of a shared platform, shared electric powertrain and shared major components between the two vehicles. Hyundai has not confirmed technical specifications, battery capacity, motor output or claimed range at the debut.
Platform sharing between Hyundai and Kia is standard practice. The Creta and Seltos are the most visible Indian example, both riding on the K2 platform with differentiated styling, interiors and feature packaging. A Neira-Carens Clavis EV pairing would follow the same template. Hyundai has not commented on whether the Neira will be sold outside Indonesia, and there is no confirmed India launch timeline or pricing at this stage.
The Car Jury verdict
The Neira is a Carens Clavis EV in a Hyundai suit, and that is a good thing for Indian buyers. Kia has already done the heavy lifting on the three-row electric MPV platform; Hyundai borrowing it for Indonesia means the R&D is amortised and an India-spec Neira becomes viable the moment Hyundai wants to slot a proper seven-seat EV between the Creta Electric and any future flagship.
Biturbo Media's Shubhabrata Marmar puts the commercial logic plainly: "Hyundai's cars sell in serious numbers." A Carens Clavis-sized EV wearing a Hyundai badge would outsell its Kia twin here, the same way Creta outsells Seltos. Wait for Hyundai to confirm India plans before writing off the Kia; the twin strategy tends to reward the Hyundai badge.
