What was announced

June 2026 sedan volumes were led, as usual, by the Maruti Dzire with 17,899 units, a 15.60% year-on-year gain over 15,484 units in June 2025. The Dzire's share of the nine-car set was 57.40%. Sequentially, however, the Dzire slid sharply from 24,546 units in May 2026. The broader segment mirrored that pattern: healthy YoY growth, sharp MoM decline after a strong May.

One car now takes 57% of India's mainstream sedan volume. The rest of the segment is fighting for the remaining 13,000 units a month.

The nine sedans tracked here posted combined sales of 31,183 units against 28,335 units in June 2025, a 10.05% rise. Compared to May 2026's 37,055 units, June was down 15.85%. Across Q2 2026 (April to June), the segment moved 1,03,456 units versus 87,868 units in Q2 2025, a gain of 15,588 units or 17.74%.

The Car Jury verdict

The sedan segment is not dying, it is consolidating around one car. Maruti Dzire's 17,899 units and 57.40% share mean every other nameplate here is fighting for scraps. The Honda City remains the segment's benchmark for rear-seat comfort, and Rachit Hirani of MotorOctane calls it "one of the most comfortable places to be in." Yet the sales sheet says buyers with City money are walking into SUV showrooms instead.

Faisal Khan of FasBeam is blunt about why Honda's mid-size sedan is stuck: "there are just so few new things in this car" when a sixth-generation City was due. Our stance is unchanged. The Honda City is still a BUY if you value ride and refinement over ground clearance. The Amaze stays a WAIT until Honda sharpens pricing against the Dzire juggernaut.
