Skoda Auto India brand director Ashish Gupta has publicly reaffirmed the company's commitment to sedans, saying the body style remains the quintessential car despite a decade of SUV dominance. The statement came alongside Skoda launching three sedans at a single event: the Slavia facelift, the Superb diesel and the Octavia RS.

What was announced

Speaking to Autocar India on 21 August 2026, Skoda Auto India brand director Ashish Gupta defended the company's continued investment in sedans even as the Indian market skews heavily toward SUVs. "If you look at it, sedans continue to be the quintessential car," Gupta said, adding that the sedan body style has defined the Skoda brand globally and in India for decades.

Rivals abandoned the sedan segment; Skoda kept the factory warm, and SUV fatigue is about to reward that patience.

Skoda currently offers more sedan models than any other premium carmaker in India. The brand recently launched three sedans at the same event: the Slavia facelift, the Superb diesel and the Octavia RS. Gupta attributed the segment's slowdown to a lack of focus from manufacturers rather than a collapse in buyer interest, and said SUV saturation is expected to work in favour of sedans going forward.

He pointed to Skoda's 90-year sedan heritage, tracing the Superb nameplate back to 1936 and citing the Octavia, Rapid and Slavia as models that have anchored the brand in India. The Slavia, launched in 2022 as a Honda City and Hyundai Verna rival, has been Skoda's most successful mid-size sedan effort in the country and continues to sell in meaningful volumes. Gupta indicated the sedan body type will continue to make commercial sense for Skoda in India, and the company has no plans to phase out its sedan portfolio in favour of a pure SUV strategy.

The Car Jury verdict

Skoda is the only mass-market brand still treating the sedan as a serious pillar, and Gupta's argument holds up. SUV saturation is real, monthly SUV launches now blur into each other, and buyers who want a proper driver's car with a boot have almost nowhere else to go. The Slavia has already proven the demand exists at the right price. Faisal Khan of PowerDrift called it out plainly: "Skoda has nailed it with the pricing of the Slavia."

Adding a Superb diesel and an Octavia RS on top of that is smart segmentation, not nostalgia. Our Slavia review already carries a BUY, and the wider Skoda-VW sedan bench, including the Kushaq and Taigun siblings, is the most coherent line-up in the segment. Rivals abandoned sedans; Skoda kept the factory warm. That patience is about to pay.
