Kia Sorento Lands 4 September: The Fortuner Fighter Kia Should Have Sent Years Ago
Kia has confirmed 4 September as the India launch date for the Sorento, its new flagship SUV. Pre-bookings are already open. The Sorento arrives with a strong hybrid powertrain, a first for Kia India, plus a diesel option, and lines up against the Fortuner, Kodiaq, Meridian, Tayron and MG Majestor.
What was announced
Kia will launch the Sorento in India on 4 September 2026, with pre-bookings already open at dealerships. This is Kia's new flagship for India and, significantly, the brand's first strong-hybrid vehicle for the market. A diesel powertrain will be offered alongside the hybrid. The Sorento sits in the premium SUV segment against the Toyota Fortuner, Skoda Kodiaq, Jeep Meridian, Volkswagen Tayron and the new MG Majestor.
Kia's first India strong-hybrid arrives in the one segment where Fortuner buyers still pay a badge premium, and Sorento can force that argument open.
Dimensionally the Sorento measures 4,815 mm long, 1,900 mm wide and 1,695 mm tall, with a 2,815 mm wheelbase. That puts it in body-on-frame Fortuner territory on length but with a monocoque three-row layout closer to the Kodiaq and Meridian. Styling is dominated by a blacked-out grille with chrome accents, vertically stacked LED headlamps, sharp LED DRLs and a dual-tone bumper. The profile gets circular wheel arches, sporty alloys and blacked-out B and C pillars, with a gently sloping roofline.
Interior details have already surfaced in spy shots ahead of launch, though Kia has not yet published trim-wise feature lists or variant pricing. Expect a dual-screen dashboard layout, ADAS suite and captain-seat second-row option consistent with the global Sorento. Full variant, price and colour details will be confirmed on 4 September.
The Car Jury verdict
Kia has needed a proper flagship in India for a while, and the Sorento finally plugs that hole. The hybrid is the more interesting story here: it is Kia India's first strong-hybrid product, and it lands in a premium SUV segment where the Fortuner still sells on badge value alone. If Kia prices the Sorento sensibly against the Kodiaq and Meridian, the diesel-plus-hybrid combination gives it a genuine two-front attack that neither the MG Majestor nor Volkswagen Tayron can match on powertrain choice.
The caveat is Kia's own record. As Faisal Khan of FasBeam has noted about the current-generation platform, this Sorento was not designed with India in mind at inception, so features and localisation need scrutiny. Wait for the 4 September pricing before booking; anything above Kodiaq money and the maths gets difficult.
