Kia Sorento gets AWD and strong-hybrid: the flagship India has been waiting for
Kia India has confirmed all-wheel drive for the Sorento in a fresh teaser ahead of the SUV's September 4, 2026 launch. The Sorento will be Kia's ICE-powered flagship here, the brand's first India model with AWD, and the first Kia sold locally with a strong-hybrid powertrain.
What was announced
Kia India's teaser confirms two headline items for the Sorento: all-wheel drive, and a Live Gen AI in-car voice assistant that handles natural-language commands. The Sorento launches on September 4, 2026, and becomes the first ICE Kia sold in India with AWD, and the first Kia here with a strong-hybrid powertrain.
Kia finally has a flagship worth stepping up to, provided it does not price the Sorento into Kodiaq and XC60 territory.
Two engines are confirmed for India, though final specs are still under wraps. The global strong-hybrid setup pairs a 1.6-litre turbo-petrol with electric assistance and a 6-speed torque-converter automatic, rated at 238hp and 380Nm. The diesel is expected to be the Carnival's 2.2-litre turbo unit, good for 202hp and 440Nm, mated to an 8-speed automatic.

Global-spec Sorento offers AWD with both the strong hybrid and the diesel. Kia India has not yet clarified whether AWD will be offered on one or both powertrains locally. Positioning is clear: this is the ICE flagship above the Carens and Seltos, and Kia's first proper play in the premium three-row segment currently ruled by the Toyota Innova Hycross and Skoda Kodiaq.
The Car Jury verdict
This is the Kia India finally needed at the top of its range. A ladder that ends at the Carens leaves the brand with nowhere to send a buyer stepping out of a Fortuner or Kodiaq, and the Seltos and Sonet, both TCJ BUYs, cannot carry that load. A strong-hybrid petrol with AWD, plus the Carnival's 2.2 diesel, gives the Sorento a real answer to the Toyota Innova Hycross and the incoming Skoda Kodiaq.
The catch is price. Team-BHP has noted how Kia stretches its GT and X Line trims to premium money, and the Sorento will land as a CBU or high-tax CKD well north of Rs 55 lakh. At that number it fights the Kodiaq and the XC60, not the Hycross. Kia has the product. It now needs the sticker to make sense.
