Volkswagen ID Cross Debuts: Compact EV Crossover Skips India Again

Volkswagen has revealed the ID Cross, the brand's first compact electric crossover, built on the MEB+ platform shared with the ID Polo hatchback. Pricing starts at EUR 27,995 (about Rs 30.77 lakh), roughly EUR 3,000 above the ID Polo, with orders open in select European markets from July 2026.
What was announced
Volkswagen has revealed the ID Cross, its first compact electric crossover, sharing the MEB+ platform with the ID Polo hatchback unveiled in April. The concept was previewed at the 2025 Munich Motor Show. It is the second Volkswagen model to adopt the brand's Pure Positive design language, following the ID Polo.
A Rs 30 lakh compact EV crossover engineered for Europe has no realistic path to Indian showrooms, and Volkswagen knows it.
The front end is upright, with connected LED headlamps, an illuminated VW emblem, and a full-width black grille section. The bumper carries generous black cladding with a silver lip and vertically-oriented air intakes. In profile, the ID Cross gets chunky black cladding on skirts and wheel arches, 18-inch alloy wheels, and a distinctive three-slot panel between the C- and D-pillars. The charging flap sits above the front-right wheel arch.

The Car Jury verdict
The ID Cross is a smart product for Europe and a non-event for India. Volkswagen's India play remains the Taigun and Virtus, both of which we rate as BUY and BUY respectively, and neither is going electric anytime soon. A Rs 30 lakh compact EV crossover, built for European charging density and taxation, has no realistic path to Indian showrooms at a competitive price. Even the ID.4 has stayed away.
Faisal Khan of FasBeam has noted that VW group EVs are finally getting Level 2 ADAS, though camera-based, which matters if this platform ever spawns an India-suitable model. For now, Skoda's Enyaq and any future MEB+ car will land as CBU curiosities. Indian buyers waiting for an affordable VW EV should stop waiting and buy the petrol Taigun.
