Tata Motors has locked in a July to September 2026 window for the Sierra EV, and the positioning is unambiguous: this is the car built to undercut the Mahindra BE6 on price while matching it on range. It will be Tata's sixth EV in India and its first genuine mid-size electric SUV, riding on an updated Acti.ev Plus platform.

The Car Jury verdict

Tata has needed a credible answer to the Mahindra BE6 ever since that car landed and reset expectations for the mid-size electric SUV segment. The Sierra EV is that answer, and the timing is right. By aiming below the BE6's roughly eighteen lakh rupee ex-showroom starting price while promising a real-world range north of 450 kilometres, Tata is playing to its biggest strength in the EV market: value per rupee.

The risk is execution. The Nexon EV remains our pick as the best budget EV in India, but its software has been a persistent weakness, and Mahindra's BE6 and XEV 9e have shown what a properly integrated tech stack feels like at this price. If the Sierra EV ships with the same patchy infotainment behaviour Tata buyers have learned to tolerate, the price advantage will not be enough.

Selling the Sierra ICE alongside the EV in the same launch window is the smart call. It hedges against slowing EV adoption in the mid-size segment and gives dealers a single nameplate to push across fuel types. For buyers, the watch item is the smaller battery variant's pricing, which is where the BE6 fight will actually be won or lost.

What was announced

Tata Motors confirmed during its FY26 product pipeline briefing that the Sierra EV will launch in the second quarter of fiscal year 2026-27, placing the on-sale window between July and September 2026. It will be the brand's sixth electric model in India and its first mid-size EV positioned directly against the Mahindra BE6.

The Sierra EV will sit on the new Acti.ev Plus platform, an evolution of the architecture underpinning the Curvv EV and Harrier EV. Two battery states of charge are expected, with the larger pack targeting a real-world range above 450 kilometres. Tata has not confirmed pricing officially, but product strategy briefings indicate a starting price below the Mahindra BE6's ex-showroom rate of approximately eighteen lakh rupees. The Sierra ICE variant has been confirmed for the same launch window and will share showroom space with the electric version.

The Sierra EV anchors a six-model FY27 pipeline that also includes the ICE Sierra, additional Harrier EV variants, the Curvv ICE, a Punch facelift, and the Altroz Racer. This is the most aggressive product cadence Tata has committed to in a single fiscal year, and it reflects pressure from Mahindra's electric SUV push as well as Maruti's entry into the EV space with the e-Vitara. Final specifications, variant split, and on-road pricing will be disclosed closer to launch.
