Mid-Size SUV Sales April 2026: Creta Holds, Victoris Storms In, Sierra Arrives

By ·

The 4.2 to 4.5 metre SUV segment, India's most contested battleground, sold 74,098 units in April 2026, up 72.65% YoY. Hyundai Creta still leads, but the Maruti Victoris debut at second place and the Tata Sierra launch reshape the buyer's shortlist. Our verdict: Creta's premium is finally being challenged on substance, and three new entrants change how you should shop this segment today.

The Car Jury verdict

The Creta still leads, but a 10.14% YoY decline in a segment growing 72% is a warning, not a footnote. Hyundai is now defending share against a Victoris that took 18.49% in its debut month and a Sierra that finally gives Tata a credible 4.3m-class product. The Seltos and Hyryder doubling YoY confirms what we have argued for two years: the Creta tax is no longer automatic.

On the Sierra specifically, Faisal Khan of FasBeam (17 May 2026) pegs the range at Rs 13.58 lakh on-road Mumbai, which is Creta money for a nameplate with thinner data. Gagan Choudhary (16 May 2026) has already flagged that the 1.5 NA petrol in the Pure variant is the volume play, and that is the variant we are reserving judgement on. Our standing call on the Tata Sierra is WAIT until the turbo-petrol and diesel land and real-world reliability data emerges.

If you want a Tata badge with conviction today, the Harrier EV and Curvv EV remain BUYs. For ICE buyers in this segment, the Seltos and Hyryder are the smarter picks over a Creta paying brand tax it no longer fully earns.

What was announced

The 4.2m to 4.5m SUV segment recorded 74,098 units in April 2026, up from 42,919 units in April 2025, a YoY jump of 72.65%. The growth was driven primarily by three new entrants: the Maruti Victoris, the Tata Sierra and the Renault Duster, all of which launched into the segment over the preceding months.

Hyundai Creta, including the Creta EV, led the segment with 15,291 units and a 20.64% share. However, Creta volumes fell 10.14% YoY against 17,016 units in April 2025, making it the only major player to decline in an expanding market. Maruti Victoris took second place with 13,701 units in its debut month, capturing 18.49% segment share straight out of the gate.

Among established nameplates, Kia Seltos posted 10,566 units, up 72.22% YoY from 6,135 units. Toyota Urban Cruiser Hyryder grew 96.36% YoY to 9,115 units, almost doubling its volume. The Maruti Grand Vitara, Tata Sierra and Renault Duster make up the rest of the segment, with the Sierra entering at a starting on-road Mumbai price of Rs 13.58 lakh as reported by Faisal Khan of FasBeam on 17 May 2026. Team-BHP (22 May 2026) notes Tata's positioning language around its SUV lineup leans on no-compromise, go-anywhere framing, which the Sierra is now expected to validate in the segment.
