Volkswagen Group is reportedly evaluating the India-built Skoda Kylaq for export to European markets, according to reports surfacing this week. The sub-4-metre SUV, which crossed 50,000 cumulative sales in India in May 2026, could be priced under Euro 20,000 (around Rs 22.26 lakh) in Europe as VW counters intensifying competition from Chinese carmakers.

What was announced

Reports indicate that decision makers within Volkswagen Group are showing keen interest in adapting the India-made Skoda Kylaq for European markets. The move is being framed as a response to the pricing pressure exerted by Chinese carmakers like BYD, MG and Chery, which have aggressively expanded across Europe with affordable EVs and ICE SUVs.

If VW gets European homologation right without inflating the price, the India-built Kylaq becomes a genuine volume weapon against the Chinese.

The Kylaq was launched in India in January 2025 at a starting ex-showroom price of Rs 7.59 lakh, which converts to roughly Euro 6,800. If exported, it would be priced under Euro 20,000 (approximately Rs 22.26 lakh) after factoring in homologation, import duties, additional safety equipment for Euro NCAP, and dealer margins. Even at that level, it would sit among the most affordable B-SUVs in Europe.

In India, the Kylaq has crossed 50,000 cumulative units since launch and is currently Skoda's bestselling model, contributing close to 60 percent of the brand's monthly sales volumes as per the April 2026 breakup. It also features in the top 10 bestselling sub-4-metre SUVs in the country, going up against the Tata Nexon, Maruti Brezza, Hyundai Venue and Mahindra XUV 3XO. The car is built at Skoda Auto Volkswagen India's Pune and Aurangabad plants under the MQB-A0-IN platform, which was developed specifically for the Indian market. A European launch would mark the first time this platform travels back to the West.

The Car Jury verdict

This is the right call, and frankly overdue. The Kylaq is the strongest product Skoda India has built in years, and exporting it back to Europe would validate the Make-in-India playbook that Hyundai and Maruti have run for a decade. At under Euro 20,000, it slots below the Kamiq and undercuts most Chinese rivals while carrying a European badge. Pricing discipline matters here: as Faisal Khan of FasBeam noted, "Skoda has nailed it with the pricing of the Slavia," and that same sharpness is visible on the Kylaq.

Skoda's India operation has matured fast, and the Kushaq and Slavia are both TCJ BUYs. The Kylaq deserves the same shot in Wolfsburg's export plan. If VW gets the homologation and crash spec right without inflating the price, this becomes a genuine volume play.
