The US National Highway Traffic Safety Administration said on Tuesday it has received a petition asking it to open a formal investigation into 806,963 Honda Odyssey minivans, model years 2011 to 2017, over inadvertent airbag deployment while the vehicles were in motion. American Honda said it will cooperate with the review.

What was announced

NHTSA confirmed on Tuesday that it has received a petition requesting an investigation into 806,963 Honda minivans over airbag concerns. The regulator said the petition specifically flags inadvertent airbag deployment while the vehicle is in motion, a fault that, if confirmed at scale, typically triggers a defect investigation and, potentially, a recall.

The complaint covers Honda Odyssey minivans from model years 2011 through 2017 sold in the United States. A petition at this stage is not a recall and not an open investigation; NHTSA first reviews the request on its merits before deciding whether to formally open a Preliminary Evaluation. Only after that stage can it escalate to an Engineering Analysis and, if warranted, compel a recall.

American Honda, the automaker's North American arm, told Reuters it is aware of the petition and "is committed to the safety of our customers," adding that "Honda respects this process and will await the agency's findings before making any additional comment." The Odyssey generation covered by the petition is a North America-only product and was never sold in India. Honda's Indian range currently comprises the City, Amaze and Elevate, none of which share the affected Odyssey's airbag control hardware. There is no India recall, no India service action and no India advisory linked to this petition at the time of writing.

The Car Jury verdict

This is a US-market matter that does not touch India directly. The Odyssey has not been sold here for years, and Honda's Indian portfolio, the City, Amaze and Elevate, uses different airbag hardware and suppliers. So Indian buyers looking at a City or Elevate should not change plans over this headline.

What it does reinforce is Honda's after-sales instinct. As Biturbo Media put it, "Even in terms of service quality, Honda has a slight advantage over Hyundai," and that matters more than a US petition when you are picking a mass-market sedan or SUV here. The bigger unresolved question for India, as Faisal Khan of FasBeam asks, is why the Elevate hybrid still is not on sale. Fix that, and Honda India has real news to make.
