Maruti Suzuki has started commercial production at Plant D of its Hansalpur facility in Gujarat, lifting the site's annual capacity from 7.5 lakh to 10 lakh units. Hansalpur is now India's largest single-location passenger vehicle plant and the first Suzuki factory anywhere in the world to touch a million-unit annual capacity.

What was announced

Plant D at Hansalpur is now operational, adding 2.5 lakh units of annual capacity to the Gujarat site. Total Hansalpur capacity has moved from 7.5 lakh units per annum to 10 lakh units per annum, making it India's largest single-location passenger vehicle manufacturing facility and the first Suzuki plant in the world to reach a one-million-unit annual capacity.

Hansalpur at a million units a year gives Maruti pricing headroom no rival can match. Tata and Mahindra should be worried, not applauding.

The new plant will initially manufacture the e Vitara, Maruti Suzuki's flagship electric SUV, which is also exported to global markets including Europe and Japan. With Plant D online, Maruti Suzuki's combined manufacturing capacity across all Indian facilities has risen to 29 lakh units per annum. The Hansalpur site itself spans 640 acres in Gujarat.

Hansalpur is now the first Suzuki factory globally to cross a one-million-unit annual capacity at a single location.

The Car Jury verdict

This milestone matters less for its scale and more for what rolls off Plant D first: the e Vitara, Maruti's flagship EV, which we currently rate WAIT. Hansalpur is now the export hub for Suzuki's global EV push, which means Indian buyers get scale pricing and a factory that cannot afford quality slip-ups when Europe and Japan are watching the same VIN plates.

Motor Inc puts it bluntly: "India's most popular brand Maruti Suzuki is always the one that will be talking about efficiency and they've always been perceived as boring except for a few highlights." Efficiency at a million units a year is exactly the point. This does not fix the e Vitara's price problem or the Brezza's ageing platform, but it does mean Maruti can drop prices harder than any rival when it needs to. The pressure now shifts to Tata and Mahindra.
