BMW X1 LWB Lands August 21: The Chauffeur-Ready X1 India Actually Wanted
BMW India has confirmed that the long-wheelbase X1 will launch on Friday, August 21. The petrol counterpart to the iX1 LWB already on sale here, it will slot in as BMW's most affordable combustion-powered LWB in India, targeting chauffeur-driven buyers in the entry-luxury SUV space.
What was announced
The X1 LWB is a stretched version of the standard X1, first developed for the Chinese market where it has been on sale since 2023. It arrives in India as the internal-combustion sibling to the iX1 LWB, which BMW already retails here. That makes it BMW's most affordable petrol-powered long-wheelbase offering in the country.
The iX1 LWB proved chauffeur-driven buyers will pay for rear legroom above almost everything else. The X1 LWB gives them the same cabin without the EV commitment.
Dimensionally, the LWB is 4,616mm long, 1,845mm wide and 1,641mm tall, riding on a 2,802mm wheelbase. That is 116mm longer overall than the standard X1, with 110mm of that going straight into the wheelbase, plus an 11mm gain in height. Every extra millimetre is aimed at the rear bench, which sits higher and gets wider headrest cushions along with the obvious legroom bump.
Styling is unchanged from the regular X1: slim LED headlamps and tail-lamps, the large kidney grilles, and the low-slung crossover stance. The China-spec car rolls on 19-inch alloys as standard with 20-inch options, but BMW India is expected to fit smaller rims in the interest of ride quality; the standard X1 and iX1 LWB here both wear 18-inch wheels. BMW has not disclosed powertrain details for the India car ahead of the August 21 launch, but the existing X1's 2.0-litre petrol is the logical fit.
The Car Jury verdict
The iX1 LWB has already proven that Indian luxury buyers, especially the chauffeur-driven ones, will pay for rear legroom above almost everything else. The X1 LWB simply gives that same cabin to buyers who are not ready to commit to an EV yet, and that is a smart, low-risk product decision from BMW India. Expect it to quietly outsell the standard X1.
The one thing to watch is pricing. As Biturbo Media of Biturbo Media notes on BMW's India strategy, the brand has been comfortable stretching sticker prices when the product justifies it. If BMW keeps the X1 LWB within striking distance of the standard X1 and well under the X3, this becomes the default pick in the family. Wait for the August 21 price before signing anything.
