Mercedes-Benz India has launched the 2026 AMG E 53 with prices starting at Rs. 1.45 crore ex-showroom for the Performance Edition and Rs. 1.48 crore for the Racing Edition. The performance sedan pairs a 3.0-litre turbocharged inline-six with a plug-in hybrid setup producing 585 HP.

Under the bonnet sits a 3.0-litre turbocharged inline six-cylinder petrol engine paired with an electric motor and a 21.2 kWh usable battery pack. Combined output stands at 585 HP and 750 Nm of torque, sent to all four wheels through a 9-speed automatic and Mercedes-Benz's 4Matic+ all-wheel-drive system. The sedan does 0-100 km/hr in a claimed 4.0 seconds.
The plug-in hybrid battery supports DC fast charging, with a 10-80% top-up taking around 20 minutes on a 60 kW charger. An 11 kW AC charger will fill the pack in roughly 2.25 hours. Mercedes-Benz claims an electric-only driving range of up to 100 km, which is enough for most daily urban commuting without waking the petrol engine. The AMG E 53 made its global debut in 2024 and slots above the regular E-Class in the Indian lineup, bringing bespoke AMG styling, chassis and technology upgrades.

The AMG E 53 is a technically fascinating machine that lands in an Indian market with almost no audience for it. At Rs. 1.45 crore, it sits in no man's land: too expensive to be an aspirational upgrade over the regular E-Class, and too compromised (a six-cylinder, not the old V8) for buyers who want a proper AMG statement. Faisal Khan of FasBeam notes that the plug-in hybrid direction was not part of the original E-Class blueprint, and it shows.
Rachit Hirani of MotorOctane calls this one of the bigger Mercedes launches of the year, and volume-wise he is right, this is a halo, not a seller.
