Mercedes-AMG E 53 PHEV lands July 23: 585hp, 100km EV range, one very expensive science project

Mercedes-Benz will launch the AMG E 53 HYBRID 4MATIC+ in India on July 23. The performance sedan returns with a plug-in hybrid powertrain pairing a 3.0-litre turbo-petrol straight-six with an electric motor, a 21.2kWh battery, and a claimed electric-only range of over 100km.
What was announced
Mercedes-Benz India has confirmed a July 23 launch date for the AMG E 53 HYBRID 4MATIC+. The car returns to the India line-up as Mercedes-AMG's latest electrified performance model, replacing the previous non-hybrid E 53 with a plug-in hybrid setup built around a 3.0-litre turbocharged straight-six petrol engine.
The E 53 is impressive engineering, but at this money it is a want, not a buy.
The engine alone produces 449hp. An electric motor integrated into the 9-speed automatic gearbox adds up to 163hp, taking combined output to 585hp and 750Nm in standard trim. With the optional AMG Dynamic Plus package and Race Start engaged, output climbs to 612hp. Claimed 0-100kph is 3.8 seconds and top speed is 280kph. The India-bound car gets 4Matic+ all-wheel drive as standard.
The plug-in system uses a 21.2kWh usable battery, giving a claimed electric-only range of over 100km on the WLTP cycle. The E 53 can run on electric power alone at speeds up to 140kph. AC charging is supported at 11kW; international markets also offer optional 60kW DC charging, though India specification has not yet been confirmed. Pricing will be announced on launch day, and the E 53 will slot above the standard E-Class LWB in Mercedes-AMG India's portfolio, competing with the BMW M5 and the incoming Audi RS 6 e-tron when it arrives.
The Car Jury verdict
The E 53 is a genuinely fascinating package on paper: 585hp, 3.8-second 0-100kph with the Dynamic Plus pack, and enough battery to run the daily commute on electrons alone. It is also a Mercedes-AMG asking Indian buyers to trust a plug-in six-cylinder hybrid at what will almost certainly be a well-north-of-Rs 1.5 crore price. As Rachit Hirani of MotorOctane puts it, luxury brands are now shipping EV with ICE
, and this is the sharpest example yet.
Our stance is straightforward. If you already own a GLS or an S-Class and want a fast toy that can commute silently, the E 53 makes sense. Everyone else looking at this money should shortlist the GLC instead. The E 53 is impressive engineering, but it is a want, not a buy.
