What was announced

On 15 August 2025, Mahindra Auto unveiled four concept vehicles at its Freedom NU event in Mumbai. All four production versions will sit on the next-generation NU_IQ platform. The Vision S and Vision X were positioned for the sub-4m SUV segment, while the Vision T and Vision SXT previewed C-segment mid-size SUVs.

Mahindra is putting the Scorpio badge on a monocoque sub-4m SUV. Get the price right and it rewrites the segment.

The Vision S is the first of the four scheduled to reach showrooms, and is widely speculated to be badged as the Scorpio Sport. That would mark the Scorpio nameplate's entry into the high-volume sub-4m B-SUV space currently dominated by the Tata Nexon, Maruti Brezza and Hyundai Venue. Mahindra has not officially confirmed the name.

The latest spy images come from automotive enthusiast Chauhan, who photographed the test mules on Mall Road in Mussoorie, Uttarakhand. Two heavily camouflaged Vision S prototypes were seen navigating the hill town's narrow lanes, followed by a Bolero Neo that appears to be acting as a support vehicle. Test mules of the production-spec Vision S have been spotted on multiple occasions prior to this sighting, dating back to before the Freedom NU reveal itself, suggesting Mahindra's engineering programme is well into validation stage. A launch window has not been disclosed by the company.

The Car Jury verdict

Putting the Scorpio badge on a sub-4m SUV is a bold call, and Mahindra has been here before without success. Team-BHP notes that "Mahindra tried body-on-frame sub 4-metre utility vehicles as well, but the Quanto UV300 and the Novo Sport did not become mainstream successes." The Scorpio nameplate, however, now carries weight the Quanto never did, thanks to the Scorpio N and the surging BE6 and XEV 9E.

The Vision S sits on the new NU_IQ platform, not the old ladder frame, so this is a modern monocoque B-SUV wearing a heritage badge. That is the right approach to take on the Nexon, Brezza and Venue. Mahindra has the brand heat to make it work, provided pricing stays under Rs 12 lakh for the volume trims. The Scorpio Sport is the most important Mahindra launch of 2026.
