July 2026 EV sales cross 30,000 again: Tata's 40% grip is back

Retail sales of electric passenger vehicles crossed 30,000 units for the second consecutive month in July 2026, with buyers taking home 32,609 EVs, up 83 percent year-on-year per Vahan data. Tata Motors posted its highest-ever monthly EV total, while Mahindra and Maruti Suzuki registered their second-best monthly numbers.
What was announced
Total EV passenger vehicle retails in July 2026 stood at 32,609 units, down marginally from June's record 33,307 but up 83 percent year-on-year. It is the second month in a row that monthly EV volumes have crossed the 30,000-unit mark, a threshold the industry only breached for the first time in June 2026.
The 30,000-a-month EV floor is now real, and it is being built by three companies selling proper showroom cars, not fleet inventory.
| Manufacturer | July 2026 units | YoY change |
|---|---|---|
| Tata Motors | 13,578 | +102% |
| Mahindra | 7,677 | +125% |
| Maruti Suzuki | Second-highest monthly total (exact figure not disclosed in source) | Not disclosed |
Tata Motors crossed the 40 percent EV market share mark for the first time in several months, driven by the Nexon EV, an updated Tiago EV, the Punch EV and the newly launched Sierra EV. It was Tata's second consecutive month above 12,000 units, and cumulative April to July retails hit 46,697 units, up 108 percent YoY. Mahindra's above-7,000-unit month was powered by the BE6 and XEV 9e. Maruti Suzuki's e-Vitara delivered the brand's second-highest monthly EV total since launch, cementing its place in the top three.
The Car Jury verdict
The 30,000-a-month floor is now real, and it is being built by three companies with genuine showroom EVs, not by fleet dumping. Tata's return above 40 percent share is the story: the Nexon EV remains the volume anchor, but the refreshed Tiago EV and Punch EV are pulling first-time EV buyers who would otherwise have bought a petrol hatch. The Sierra EV launch will only harden that lead; Rachit Hirani of MotorOctane has already walked viewers through the car, and our own Sierra review lands on BUY.
Mahindra's 125 percent YoY jump vindicates the BE6 and XEV 9e bet, and our BE6 verdict stays BUY. Team-BHP's question about India cracking rare-earth-free EV motors matters here: the cost curve is finally bending in the buyer's favour.
